3M™ Scratch Removal System, 39071
Guaranteed to remove light paint scratches & scuffs. Improves paint's appearance. Easy to use system. Repairs multiple scratches. Repairs light paint damage from light key scratches, swirl marks and light oxidation.
Will the Scratch Removal System work on all types of scratches?
No. The system will only for scratches that are in the clear coat of the paint. Scratches that are deep enough to reach the base coat, primer or metal cannot be removed. An easy way to check for the depth of the scratch is to run your finger nail across the scratch, if it catches, the scratch may not be fully removed. Do not use this system on glass.
Why do I need to use a 1200-1600 rpm drill?
The speed of the drill is important. A drill that runs faster than 1600 rpm generates excessive heat and can cause damage to the paint surface. Drills that run slower than 1200 rpm are not efficient for this process.
How do I know when I am done with the sanding step (Trizact 3000 grit)?
This is the step that removes enough clear coat to level the scratch down and remove it. It is very important that this step be done by hand and with water. You will want to continuously check your work by drying the area after sanding to get a good look at the area and visually check to see if you have removed the scratch.
How much water is needed with the Trizact P3000 abrasive square?
A mist of water from a spray bottle on the scratched surface and on the abrasive square should be sufficient. If the surface becomes dry while sanding, apply a mist of water to the scratched surface and/or the abrasive square.
How much Rubbing Compound is needed on the purple buffing pad?
Apply and add Rubbing Compound in dime-sized amounts as needed to the purple buffing pad until the paint surface has a uniform look. This will minimize the amount of sling which reduces waste and clean-up. The amount of Rubbing Compound needed to complete each scratch removal will vary depending on the size of the scratch.
How much Scratch Remover is needed on the black polishing pad?
Apply and add Scratch Remover in dime-sized amounts as needed to the black polishing pad until the paint surface has a uniform look. This will minimize the amount of sling which reduces waste and clean-up. The amount of Scratch Remover needed to complete each scratch removal will vary depending on the size of the scratch.
Are there any places I should not use this system?
Do not use on glass or plastic surfaces of the vehicle. Use only on painted surfaces.
How far beyond the scratched area should I sand, buff and polish?
Each subsequent step will require you to move outward from the repair roughly 1-2 inches for each step. Start by sanding with the Trizact 3000 square as closely to the damage as possible. Move outward approximately 1-2 inches in radius from the 3000 grit scratches with the buffing step. Then, with the polishing step, move outward approximately another 1-2 inches in radiusfrom the buffing step. This will help to ensure that all defects are removed from the scratch, as well as the other steps.
What if I still see a haze or scratches after I am done?
Simply repeat the compounding step with the purple foam pad followed by the final step using Scratch Remover with the black foam pad.
