Why test for fluoride levels?

Optimum fluoride levels maximize its cavity fighting benefits while minimizing the risk of fluorosis. The American Dental Association, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics, all recommend determining home water fluoride content as the first step in identifying your fluoride needs.

What is fluorosis?

Fluorosis is a defect in the enamel caused by exposure to excessive fluoride levels. In its mildest form, fluorosis appears as white spots on the teeth. Severe cases result in brown spots or pitting.

My community water supply is fluoridated. Should I have my water tested?

Yes. The age of a municipal water system and multiple water treatment plants within one community can vary the fluoride ion levels for families within the same community.

Does well water contain fluoride?

Maybe. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral and levels in well water can vary significantly.

Does bottled water contain fluoride?

Depending on the source of bottled water, it may contain fluoride.
